The legend says that shivalingam was shattered in to five pieces and the biggest piece is fifteen foot long column of white marble, which is worshipped at Amravati temple. It is believed that Indra the king of Devas, Brihaspathi the guru of the gods, sukra the preceptor of Asuras installed this Lingam
History of the Amareswar temple
The Temple is surrounded on all the four sides by towering usual Dravidian type of Temple Architecture. Another specialty of this temple is that Amravati is situated along side river Krishna. The ritual dip in this river is to be considered as holy and meritorious. There is another legend is that the temple was originally Buddhist in origin and later on this was readapted to Hindu worship. There is a white marble lotus medallion of delicate and ornate Buddhist style The region of Amravati is world famous for Buddha stupas and sculpture depicts the life style of Buddha in Amaravathi.
